The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

The gates of his heart were flung open, and his joy flew far over the sea.And he closed his eyes and prayed in the silence of his soul.

As he descended the hill, a sadness came upon him, and he thought in his heart:

How shall i go in peace and without sorrow?Nay, not without a wound in the spirit shall i leave this city.

Long were the days of pain i have spent within its walls, and long were the nights of aloneness;and who can depart from his pain and his aloneness without regret?

If in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure

It is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed

For love is sufficient unto love

Love has no other desire but tofulfil itself

If you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night

To know the pain of too much tenderness

To be wounded by yout own understanding of love

And to bleed willingly and joyfully

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy

To return home at eventide with gratitude

And then sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips

Love one another, but make not a bond of love

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls

Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup

Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone

Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music

Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping

For only the hand of life can contain your hearts

And stand together yet not too near together

For the pilliars of the temple stand apart

And oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow

Patient, over patient, is the captain of my ship

The wind blows, and restless are the sails

Even the rudder begs direction

Yet quietly my captain awaits my silence

And these my mariners, who have heard the choir of the greater sea, they too have heard me patiently

Now they shall wait no longer

I am ready

When you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing

When you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb

When the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance

wings&roots

wanna bet?by John Smutniak

New market will spring up in unusual places in 2004.No,not stock-and-bond markets, of which there are now arguably too many. The growth will be in "opinion markets", which enable traders to profit on everything from the fate of starlets to the outcomers of elections and wars.

For the shape of things to come, try the Hollywood Stock Exchange, an internet-based exchange where you can take a punt on the performance of films and celebrities.(HSX bonds on Sharon Stone, for example, traded at nearly $1,000 in the late 1990s,but have since fallen to $8.) Having started as an online curiosity in the mid-1990s, to provide films buffs a place to forecast the Oscars, the HSX was bought by the high-finance brokers at Cantor Fitzgerald two years ago. Today the HSX boasts over 1 m users, and let you guess at such details as a film's opening-weekend box-office haul.

Companies will use opinion markets in their own sales forecasting, as HP(Hewlett Packard)is doing. Sports bookies, too, will continue to move up from their previous digs in dark, airless betting shps and offer ever-increasing varieties of gambles. Trade-sports, an Irish company, let's you do more than take a flutter on football matches. It also offers bets on the outcomes of celebrity trails.

An election year in America, 2004 will se  other opinion markets put to the test. Iowa Electronic Markets is a university-based system that allows traders to bet on political contests. Iowa's markets have proved more accure than opinion polls over the past two decades. People are never so honest, or diligent in their forecasts, as when they put their own money behind their opinions.

Markets in other types of political analysis are in the works. In 2003 the Pentagon cancelled a scheme to fund a market for the odds of instability in the Middle Est, after politicians protested. In 2004 the private sector may take up the idea.

New computer programs make such markets work more efficiently than ever. One company, Longitude, makes software indebted to the pari-mutuel-style betting uesd at racecourses. This has enabled traders at big banks to wager their forecasts of unemployment and other economic data. The internet has provided deeper and more liquid markets.

The hope is that such "gambling"serves a higher purpose, by aggregating opinions efficenly and translating them into prices. The odds can provide more reliable information than any single expert. A bigger hope is that this can be uesd to insure againse a rang of bad outcomers. Markets for forecasting the prices of houses in certain neighbourhoods, or lifetime earings in a certain career, could prove quite uesful. A contract to insure against the failure of a marriage cannot be far behind. But whether the HSXcan help to improve the qulity of American films is a more distant hope.

Not so lonely planet by Oliver Morton

The first humans to land on Mars will be father flung than any explorers in history.

But their destination will already be familiar to them, thanks to a long line of robots.

Earth's first unmanned mission zipped past in 1965, snapping 22 blurred and grainy pictures as it went.

NASA's Mars Global Surveyor has sent back about 130,000 high-resolution pictures since 1997, as well as all sorts of other data, and is still going strong.

Its younger sibling, Mars Odyssey, arrived in 2001. And now more are on the way.

By early 2004 seven spacecraft will be on or around Mars.

These include two orbiters, Mars Express-Europe's first mission to another planet-and Japan's Nozomi, also a first.

Nozomi(''hope'')has its problems, and may not quite make it to Mars.

If it does, it will study the thin plasmas swirling around the planet.

Mars Express carries instruments for probing the planet itself, including the first radar capable of returning data from below the Martian surface, where vast layers of ice are expected.

Cading a lift on the back of Mars Express is beagle 2, a lander developed by British scientist.

Beagle 2 is a cheap mission, said to have cost little more than 50 m, but it is also a very ambitious one, aimed at finding evidence of life.

The two American landers, Spirit and Opportunity, are the first missions designed to land, look around for the most promising parts of the landscape to study, and then trundle off and study them.

Given two interesting landing sites- one that seems to have been an ancient hydo-thermal system, and one that might have been the bottom of a lake-the chances are good that the rovers' masters will learn something new about the planet's geological history.

If the masters could go there themselves, they would undoubltly do a better job of it.

But in a world where the odds of a Mars mission succeeding vary between one-in-three and three-in-five, sending humans seems a little premature.

When they do set off, though, the data sent back by decades of robot scouts will make them the est informed explorers ever.
